Notes: This is the first planetary nebula discovered. Charles Messier first spotted this nebula in 1764. This nebula is caused from a star at the end of its life shedding off massive amounts of gas leaving behind a white dwarf star. This probably happened 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. The Dumbbell Nebula is about 1,250 light years away. Also known as NGC6853.
